Highlander reboot gets financing, Justin Lin attached to direct.

Cower in fear Highlander fans because another Hollywood remake is coming to a town near you sooner rather than later.  Sadly as you might have guessed, it’s a beloved cult film that will probably get the shaft this time.

It seems that Summit Entertainment is partnering with RCR Media Group to fully finance a remake of Highlander.  Along with full financing, Justin Lin, the up-and-coming director who has made his name directing muscular, silly, yet well done films like the last few Fast & The Furious movies is attached to direct.  He’s becoming an in-demand director and I bet they paid a high price to get him.

For those of you who may not know what Highlander is about, I’ll give you a brief description of the original.

Highlander came out in 1986.  It was directed by Russell Mulcahy and starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod who dies in battle hundreds of years earlier, only to wake hours afterward.  People who die violent deaths and come back like this are immortals; people who cannot die unless their head is severed from their body.  These immortals have fought down through the centuries until the time of the gathering when the last few left in the world fight for the mythical “prize”.  What that prize is is unknown, but it’s apparently worth fighting for.

Sean Connery played Connor’s mentor Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez  who has lived for many hundreds of years already and rather than take his head, instead gives instructions on the nature of the game they play and what is at stake.

The film was a surprise success and spawned several additional sequels which were fairly bad, but also gave rise to an excellent tv series in the 90’s.

This remake sounds like it is either going to be really really bad or really good.  I can’t see there being a middle ground in terms of it’s quality.  On the one hand, it doesn’t need to be remade, and yet if done correctly, it could be a good film to add to the franchise and maybe even increase interest in the series as a whole which could be nice.

I’m not much of a fan of remakes to be honest, but it sounds like it’s coming whether we want it or not.

What are your thoughts on this news?   Who might be the best actors to play Connor and other main characters?
